History
Life in Rukongai
After her death in the human world due to unknown causes, Hitomi was brought in the Hanging Dog district of Rukongai. Growing up there, Hitomi became used to dangerous situations, and above all else the pain of crippling hunger. She spent most of her days and nights looking for food and protecting a number of orphans that had flocked around her from various things. She was relatively known within her district as somewhat of an angel as she was always ready to help out others when they asked regardless of any amount of self-sacrifice involved in the task. She was well-respected among the impoverished for refusing to steal food, instead working for whatever food was available, and sometimes even giving away food even if it meant she had to starve. There eventually came a time when Hitomi was walking the streets with several of the orphans she was taking care of at the time, and two drunk shinigami came out of a bar, one of the children accidently bumped into one of the men, stubbing his toe. The man reacted in extreme anger, attempting to strike the child with his hand before being stopped by Hitomi. She shooed the children away from the situation and went on to try to talk to the two men in order to calm them down. The man who she had stopped from punching a child seemed to be too angry, and immediately attempted to punch Hitomi, missing due to her quick dodge. By this point, Hitomi was used to street scuffles with the rowdy local men, but two shinigami were out of her league. After managing to dodge that first blow, the other Shinigami used Shunpo to get behind her and restrain her. In response, Hitomi glared at the other man, and a blue orb of energy began to form over her forehead. The man seemed a little surprised, but was overall undeterred as he pulled out his zanpakuto and raised it over his head. He tells Hitomi that her disrespect is what caused her death this day before bringing his Zanpakuto down upon her. Hitomi closed her eyes and resigned to her fate when she suddenly feels herself being dropped to the ground, and hears the sound of two men being knocked out. When she opens her eyes, she notices that the two men had been defeated by another shinigami who happened to be passing by. The residents of the district who witnessed this began to cheer and called this man a hero. She looks at this man, who seemed to be no one special, but had a strange aura about him, an aura that made her feel comfortable and safe. He smiles at her, telling her that that little situation was quite a close call while extending his hand to help her to her feet. When she reaches her feet, the children come over to her and hug her legs crying, and screaming about how they were scared that they’d lose her. She looks over at the man who just saved her and thanks him for his deed. When the children let go, she drops to her knees and begs the man to take her into the seireitei in order for her to learn how to become a shinigami, and use her pay to assist the children of the district. The man is slightly taken aback but agrees to her request, promising to show up the next day in order to take her there, while also giving her time to say goodbye to her friends in the district. After finding another place for the children to stay, and performing her last-minute tasks, Hitomi is taken into the Seireitei and indicted into the Shinigami Academy.
Life in Shino Academy
On her very first day in Seireitei, the man who saved her back in Rukongai takes Hitomi to the first squad barracks and informs the receptionist that he brought a potential shinigami to be trained by the best of the best. The receptionist looks annoyed for a moment, and looks over his large mahogany desk at Hitomi, who stares at him with a quiet determination. His eyes relax, and he exclaims that he likes the look in her eyes. He asks Hitomi if she’s capable of anything in particular, to which she nods and holds her hand about eye level. The man stares into her hand for a moment and asks her what she’s trying to do, and suddenly lurches backward into his seat, amazed that Hitomi was suddenly holding an orb of reiatsu in her hand. He immediately asks Hitomi what her name is, to which Hitomi answers and watches him write some things down on a sheet of paper. He hands her the paper, which is an admittance form to Shino Academy, Hitomi bows quietly in thanks of the man, and looks toward her savior, bowing at him once more as well. The shinigami smiles and leaves the room as Hitomi receives her uniform and is sent to the academy. Upon admittance in the academy, Hitomi showed talent in everything the school had to offer, achieving top marks in every lesson, quickly mastering the basics of Zanjutsu, Kido, and Hoho. Repeatedly earning the top scores in every class, Hitomi was able to participate in an arranged mission where Shinigami tutors would show students what an actual hollow battle was like. During this mission, things went a little out of control when the hollows appeared before the tutors arrived on the scene. Several students were slaughtered as a result, but Hitomi managed to hold off the rest of the Hollows long enough for the tutors to arrive and destroy the hollow without much else damage. When all was said and done, the surviving students immediately clamored around Hitomi, calling her a hero. The tutors were impressed, and pushed paperwork to have Hitomi sent over to the 13 Court Guard Squads, effectively allowing her to graduate much earlier than usual.
Acceptance into the 3rd Squad
A few days after the mock mission, Hitomi received a notice that she was expected in the Squad 1 barracks to report for duty. She gathered her belongings and went to the barracks as requested, where she met the receptionist. Hitomi was handed her mark of graduation, and informed that her immense talents have allowed for her to graduate from the academy early, as well as being allowed to enter the 13 court guard squads as an unseated officer. He hands her a brochure that explains what all the squads were about, which Hitomi ponders over for a small moment before deciding on Squad 3. The receptionist is mildly amused, wondering why such a stand up girl would want to enter a disreputable squad like 3. Hitomi simply smiles and tells him that the description reminded her of home, impressing the receptionist. He signs some papers and points Hitomi in the direction of the Squad 3 barracks. Upon arriving in the barracks, she immediately is beset by bags of flour that are thrown at her from all directions. She skillfully dodges all the bags of flour but one, which was thrown at her from above by the squad’s captain. She chuckles a little, finding the squads’ antics to be hilarious, much to the enjoyment of the soldiers within the squad. A man, who appeared to be the lieutenant comes out of the building and pats her on the shoulder, telling her that all new members are treated to some form of prank, so the squad can tell if the person is of good humor, thus good for the squad. Hitomi appears confused for a moment, but takes this in stride as the lieutenant tells her that she passed the test with flying colors, and that it was hilarious watching her dodge bags of flour however short-lived her feat would be. He also warns her that since the other members of the squad were unable to get her, that they’d all be trying to get her one way or another, and to keep on her toes. She nods, and the lieutenant smiles at her before grabbing the back of her head and immediately slamming her face into a pastry that was located on a table next to her. She pulls her face out of the pastry in embarrassment, remarking to herself that he was also talking about himself in that situation. This causes the barracks to erupt in laughter, and Hitomi smiles as she makes her way to the washroom to clean herself of the flour and pastry, feeling that this squad was perfect for her.
Life in the 3rd Squad
Hitomi spent most of her days undergoing missions alongside her squad, and very quickly managed to make her way to the third seat of the squad. She was generally beloved within the squad for her caring and understanding attitude, while also being fun to be around as she wasn’t afraid to get rough if necessary. The squad continued to have joy-filled days until they were sent on a dangerous mission. While scouting ahead of the squad alongside the lieutenant, Hitomi and the lieutenant were ambushed by several small adjuchas level hollow. The two drew their swords and fought bravely, managing to kill the Hollows that attacked them. The two reveled in their survival, but the joy was short-lived, as a claw burst through the lieutenant’s chest. He manages to lurch around in order to see what attacked him, but dropped to his knees, and subsequently died soon after, to Hitomi’s horror. It was at this moment when Hitomi was thrust into her mind’s eye, and met her Zanpakuto. The Zanpakuto admits that she could have awoken it ages ago, but it decided to wait until Hitomi was locked into a dangerous situation to manifest. It introduces itself as Masamune, and apologies to Hitomi profusely. Hitomi places her hand on Masamune’s shoulder, telling her that she doesn’t mind, as a zanpakuto knows best in regards to it’s wielder. She then drops to her knees and begs Masamune for assistance, to which the zanpakuto agrees to lend her its power. She finds herself back where she was, as quickly eviscerates the hollow that slew her lieutenant with a swipe of her blade that caused a thin crescent shaped shockwave to emerge from the blade and rend the hollow asunder. It was at this moment when the rest of the squad caught up, witnessing the aftermath of the battle. Hitomi greets the squad cheerfully, and explains that the lieutenant fought bravely before his death, passing out herself soon after. She came to later, waking up in captain’s office. As she wipes her eyes, the captain points at her arm. She looks over and notices that the lieutenant’s armband is on her arm and is astonished. The captain explains that the previous lieutenant had recommended her for his position ages ago, and now that he was gone, the only logical choice was to respect his wishes. She quietly thanks the previous lieutenant under her breath, and exits the room. She eventually managed to achieve Bankai at an unknown date, but kept it under wraps as express humility and not upset the other lieutenants who had yet to achieve bankai. Since that day, Hitomi has faithfully served her position well, and her efforts have improved Squad 3’s reputation immensely within the 13 court guard squads.
